Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter awarded check for election poll work

Fifty-two Villagers who are members of the John Bartram Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution were present at the Eisenhower Recreation center Friday when Sumter County Elections Supervisor Bill Keen awarded the group with a check for $1,640.

Six members of the chapter, Brenda Thomason, Tina Getz, Cyndi Kalevar, Susan O’Dell, Claudia Jacques and Sandy Purcell had participated in the county’s adopt a precinct program in which charitable groups volunteer as poll workers for elections. The county then awards the group money that otherwise would have been paid to poll workers.

Keen said that 11 of the 14 groups that participated in the adopt a precinct program are located in The Villages. He also noted that the volunteer poll workers helped cut down on the absentee poll worker problems that sometimes occurs on Election Day. He also said that when 501(c)(3) charitable groups participate in the program, tax dollars continue to benefit society.

The John Bartram Chapter also raises money to support the Florida cottage at the Tamassee DAR School. The Tamassee school is one of six run by DAR, which are dedicated to help children who have been victims of abuse or neglect. They provide the cottage with funds and Christmas gifts.

One local DAR member, Susanne Furr, creates personal cards for each child every month, which chapter members often supplement with gifts.

The John Bartram Chapter meets on the third Friday of every month at the Eisenhower Recreation Center.
