A golf cart which had been charging its battery apparently ignited a blaze Thursday night at a home in The Villages.

The Villages Public Safety Department was called at 10:16 p.m. to the home at 3406 Auburndale Ave. in the Village of Summerhill.

Damage to the golf cart was noticeable after a fire ignited in a garage at a home in the Village of Summerhill.

Flames and heavy smoke were coming from the garage of the home when firefighters arrived on the scene.

Firefighters conducted a search of the home and found no one inside. They deployed a hose and quickly brought the fire under control.

“The fire was confined to a golf cart, with paint damage to a passenger vehicle, overhaul was initiated to fully extinguish the fire, and the home was ventilated using a positive-pressure fan. Heavy smoke damage was noted in the garage. The area of origin was the golf cart battery, which was charging at the time of the fire,” said Villages Public Safety Department Deputy Chief of Operations Robert Ramage.

The damage was confined to the garage of the home and the vehicles within the garage, he added.

Firefighters arrived on the scene in four minutes and 47 seconds.
