Woman reportedly depressed about holidays accidentally fires gun in Village of Briar Meadow

A woman reportedly depressed about the holidays, accidentally fired a gun at her home in the Village of Briar Meadow.

The woman’s husband had called her doctor at the Mulberry Care Center on Monday and told the doctor that his wife had been in possession of a handgun and was possibly suicidal, according to an incident report from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies went to the couple’s home on Kittredge Loop where the 74-year-old husband reported that his wife’s depression had gotten worse and indicated it could be connected to the holidays. He said that on Sunday his 76-year-old wife had found a .22-caliber gun he keeps in the nightstand and had accidentally fired it. He said when he heard the shot, he immediately ran to the master bedroom. He said his wife was “irate” and asked, “Why do you have a loaded firearm in the house?” He told his wife he had the gun in the house for personal protection, the report said.

The woman told a deputy she had discovered the gun and when she picked it up, it discharged in the drawer.

The woman reportedly has a followup appointment with her doctor so he can evaluate her depression.
