John Driscoll shows off a worn flag before dropping it off for proper disposal.

John Driscoll of the Village of Belle Aire on Friday afternoon dropped off a sun-bleached, worn American flag at American Legion Post 347 in honor of Flag Day.

The post was collecting worn flags for proper disposal.

“I fly the flag seven days a week, 24 hours a day,” said Driscoll who served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963.

“Because of the outdoor exposure, sometimes I have to retire more than one flag per year,” Driscoll said.

Driscoll has taken several trips to Washington D.C. with World War II veterans as a member of Villages Honor Flight.

Flag Day is always observed on June 14. The day commemorates the adoption of the flag of United States on this day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.

Anyone who has a flag they would like to turn over for proper disposal may do so any day of the year (during regular office hours) at American Legion Post 347 at the corner of Rolling Acres Road and County Road 466. However, the post puts out a special call for worn flags in honor of Flag Day.

For more information, call the post at 750-2099.
