Fernando surprises fans with unannounced gig in Villages

Jerry Vicenti, head of the Italian Paisans Club, could hardly keep from smiling Sunday night.

He had a secret. A big secret.

He already had Suzie Casta and Lisa Hanna Coan lined up to entertain the club at SeaBreeze Recreation Center.

But he had been able to snag one more entertainer.

And then Fernando Varela came on stage.

The same Fernando of Forte fame who performed at the National Tree Lighting ceremony a week earlier for President Obama. The same Fernando who recently played Carnegie Hall. And the same Fernando performing in Vegas later this month.

Despite all of the fame garnered through his “America’s Got Talent” performances, he remains grounded right here.

“Every time I come to The Villages, I feel like I am coming home,” Fernando told the crowd.

After singing three powerhouse songs, he was nearly mobbed by club members eager to buy CDs, which Fernando happily autographed.

Fernando will be performing in January at New Covenant United Methodist Life Center in The Villages.

There will be two concerts Friday, Jan. 24 (at 5 and 8 p.m.) and Saturday, Jan. 25 (at 3 and 7 p.m.)

You can watch a clip of his Sunday performance at the link below:
