Hundreds of villagers took advantage of the paper shredding trucks parked in the Target parking lot on Saturday morning during the second annual Scam Jam Shred-A-Thon. The shredding event is hosted by Lady Lake Police Department and is a collaborative effort between Citizens First Bank, Target, Seniors vs. Crime and Lake, Sumter and Marion Counties Sheriffs Offices.
The program is designed to increase public awareness regarding scams in the area. Detective Butch Perdue indicated that awareness was an important step to reaching the ultimate goal of educating the public.
Detective Perdue estimated that the event had seen roughly 1,500 vehicles by the late afternoon, with two trucks operating continuously. During last year’s event, over 8,000 pounds of sensitive documents were destroyed. The popularity of last year’s event resulted in a two-truck effort this time around.
If you are interested in shredding some of your old, sensitive documents, the Rainbow Family & Friends Club of The Villages will host their Annual Paper Shred Benefiting Leesburg & Sumter Co Animal Hunane Societies next Saturday, March 22, 2014. Read more about that event here.
