Spruce Creek South resident Bill Williams was thrilled when golf-cart crossing at the entrance to his community across U.S. Hwy. 27/441 was permitted.

The change officially took place May 29.

For years, Williams championed the effort, taking his case to the Florida Department of Transportation, the Marion County Commission, the Stonecrest community, legislators and whoever else would listen.

Residents in golf carts had been “sneaking” across, but now it is legal for a non-Street Legal golf cart to cross the highway at 175th SE Place.

But Williams isn’t done.

He would like to see additional signage at the crossing.

Golf cart crossing signs have been placed at the intersection. But Williams would like to see signs placed along U.S. Hwy. 27/441 warning automobile traffic that drivers are approaching a golf-cart crossing.

And there is one more thing the 13-year resident of Spruce Creek South wants.

He wants a golf-cart crossing at Bella Cruz Drive and U.S. Hwy. 27/441 in front of The Villages Regional Hospital.

That falls outside his county of residence, but said he plans to continue lobbying state Sen. Alan Hays and FDOT.

“You have to keep trying,” Williams said. “I am happy with what we got, but it’s not enough.”
