To the Editor:
Each year, from Memorial Day through the 4th of July, we see patriotic gatherings at the Veterans Park. And we see lines of flags in front of Villagers’ homes. Our recognition of those who have served our country is important, and it is heartening that here, in the Villages, that service is regularly celebrated.
But we also have men and women in active service and now, more than ever, as we continue in the longest battle this country has ever endured, we need to recognize our current service members beyond displaying our flags. Yes, we have Operation Shoebox, a fantastic group of dedicated volunteers supported by many of us. But, I suggest we all do something additional—donate to the USO.
This private organization, unfunded by our government, helps our troops and their families in active duty, injured or wounded, and transitioning from war to home. The USO relies on private donations to provide the funds to keep their support for our troops ongoing. Donate to USO, 2111 Wilson Blvd, Ste 1200, Arlington, Va, 22201. You’ll feel better for it.
