Sumter County renews permit for construction debris landfill on CR466A
An expired operating permit for a demolition and construction debris landfill south of County Road 466A in The Villages was renewed Monday night for eight years.

Sumter County commissioners voted unanimously to approve the operating permit for Howard Hewitt and CR 466A Landfill Facility, Inc.

The landfill is located near The Villages Health Colony Care Center on Farner Place, just east of the new Fruitland Park development.

County development director Karl Holley said it has met all safety and health requirements.

“There is nothing that the landfill is doing that is inconsistent with any approval they’ve received,” Holley said.

Commission chairman Don Hahfeldt said he received a letter from a nearby resident objecting to an odor from the facility. The resident suggested renewing the permit for two years and then closing it.

But Commissioner Doug Gilpin said the landfill is a “well-run facility.”

Commissioners also decided Monday night not to terminate a contract with Suncoast Credit Union for and ATM machine outside the county courthouse in Bushnell. But they approved another contract with Cord Financial Services to install ATM machines inside the courthouse and at the fairgrounds, the annex building on CR 466 and the services building on CR 466A.

Cord Financial Services is an independent sales organization for Wells Fargo Bank of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Citizen’s Bank of Providence, R.I..

Commissioner Garry Breeden said the credit union has been in Sumter County for 25 years and deserved consideration.

County Administrator Bradley Arnold said the county tried to work with Suncoast, but the credit union did not want to set up ATMs at all four locations.
