A lightning strike sparked a fire Tuesday afternoon in the attic of a home in Del Webb Spruce Creek.

At 1:58 p.m., dispatchers at the Marion County Public Safety Communications department received an emergency call from the homeowner of 12871 SE 82nd Court Road in Summerfield. The caller advised the home was struck by lightning and that she could see smoke coming from the ceiling of her bedroom closet.

Heavy smoke was showing from the 2,000 square foot residence when Ladder 30 arrived first on scene at 2:05 p.m. Twenty firefighters and nine units were dedicated to the fire.

Crews completed both the primary and secondary searches and initiated an offensive interior attack.

Firefighters were then ordered out of the structure as the fire had compromised the structural integrity of the roof. Crews began defensive operations and the fire was deemed under control at 2:33 p.m.

The cause of the fire has been determined to be a lightning strike.
