Some openly called for the recall of supervisors who in September voted in favor of side striping.
Now residents are losing a supervisor who had voted against it.
At the end of a rambunctious meeting Friday, Supervisor Joe Elliott announced his resignation. The Village of Pennecamp resident made it known that he and his wife of 45 years are moving out of CDD 8.
Elliott has put forth the name of Phil Walker as a possible successor. Walker, also a resident of the Village of Pennecamp, currently represents CDD 8 on the Architectural Review Committee. He is a member of the Villages Homeowners Association. He retired as a vice president of the Hy-Vee supermarket chain.
An overflow crowd showed up at Lake Miona Recreation Center on Friday, furious with the three supervisors who had voted in favor of side striping – Sal Torname, Victor Ray and Ray Banks.
Residents who openly admitted they hadn’t paid much attention to the previous CDD 8 elections were suddenly very interested in the five men serving on their board.
Torname, who serves as the board’s chair, has already picked up paperwork to run again for his seat next year. The seat of Dennis Hayes, who has adamantly stood against side striping, will also be up for grabs in 2016.
Elliott was appointed to CDD 8 in 2013 and won election to the seat last year.
Duane Johnson lost his CDD 8 seat last year to newcomer Banks. Johnson continues to attend CDD 8 meetings and took to the podium Friday to rail against the side striping vote.
The District Office will begin collecting applications for the vacant seat. The board will choose who will fill Elliott’s term which runs through 2018.
