Two American hunters in Scotland stumble across a quaint village. It is a mythical town that appears out of the highland mist for a single day every 100 years called Brigadoon. The hunters Tommy (Dan Wilson) and Jeff (Shelly Whittle) get swept up in the aura of the mystic village. ommy falls deeply in love with Fiona (Stephanie Hutchison) and faces a dramatic decision as their day draws to a close.
The musical “Brigadoon” by Lerner and Lowe plays well on the Melon Patch stage. Both Wilson and Hutchinson are veteran performers with excellent voices. Music is live by the versatile duo of Natalie Renick and TJ Wollard and is more than adequate.
Melon Patch uses their full-sized scrim to maximum effect. Choreography by Sally Gage is a hallmark of excellence at The Patch and the dancers are up to the task of showing it.
The banter between the buddies Tommy and Jeff is right on the mark. Casting gambles by Director Charlotte Jardine paid off as teenagers Paris Van Gorder, Riley Stauffer, and Hannah Isom perform well in supporting roles.
Special mention goes to Ryan Stauffer as Charlie Darlymple for outstanding energy and bagpipe playing.
Costuming is bright and colorful. However, blocking in full cast scenes is unimaginative.
“Brigadoon” is an endearing love story well worth the 15-minute drive to Leesburg from Spanish Springs in The Villages. Opening night had large groups from two clubs in attendance and gets my recommendation for a club event. The musical runs weekends through May 22.
