Lt. Darrin Segrest of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office has successfully completed the FBI National Academy.
The FBI National Academy is a professional development course for U.S. and international law enforcement leaders. It serves to improve the administration of justice in police departments and agencies at home and abroad and to raise law enforcement standards, knowledge, and cooperation worldwide.
Segrest’s class consisted of 231 participants from 47 different states and 23 different countries. Segrest describes it as challenging both mentally and physically but also as “a wonderful and exciting experience to network, outreach and gather information.”
Segrest also said it hit the “reset” button for him, he learned a lot about law enforcement, life after law enforcement and himself. He is extremely proud of the completion of the “Yellow Brick Road” challenge. The Yellow Brick Road is the final test of the fitness challenge, the Yellow Brick Road is a grueling 6.1-mile run through a hilly, wooded trail built by the Marines. Along the way, the participants must climb over walls, run through creeks, jump through simulated windows, scale rock faces with ropes, crawl under barbed wire in muddy water, maneuver across a cargo net, and more.
Segrest has 23 years in law enforcement 17 of which are with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. Segrest is currently assigned as a Watch Commander in the Patrol Division.
“Though this experience he will become a better leader in the future for this agency and the people of Sumter County that he serves,” said Sheriff Bill Farmer.
