A 53-year-old man arrested in The Villages in 2015 on a drunk driving charge who later stole his father’s car while free on bond has been sentenced to three years in prison.

David M. Mihalko of Summerfield was sentenced last week in Sumter County Court on charges of driving under the influence and driving while license suspended. He had pleaded no contest to the charges earlier in the month.

He was sentenced to three years in the Department of Corrections.

He had been arrested in August 2015 at the Circle K service station at Bella Cruz Drive in The Villages. You can read more about that arrest HERE. A criminal history check at the time of his arrest showed Mihalko had three previous DUI convictions between 2000 and 2009 in Michigan and Iowa.

While he was free on bond, he was arrested in April of this year after he took his father’s Crown Victoria from Del Webb Spruce Creek and was involved in an accident. He was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries suffered in  the accident. When Mihalko was released from the hospital, a deputy informed him he was being charged with grand theft auto.

“Good. That way it can be cleared up easier later,” Mihalko told the deputy, according to the report.

In October in Marion Count Court, Mihalko had been sentenced to three years in prison in connection with the theft of his father’s Crown Victoria. He was also ordered to pay $3,406 in restitution to Hartford Financial Services Group for damage to the vehicle.
