Frankie Brin Financial (FBF) 70’s traveled to Seminole Softball Complex in Sanford, FL to compete in the FHCASA Seminole County Winter Open Softball Tournament on February 4-5, 2017. FBF achieved a 4-0 record to win the 70’s top bracket.

Saturday’s first game was a 21-6 victory for FBF over Senior Moments. Roger Scott, Roy Hern, Floyd Williams and Bob Buchanan were 4-4 and Dave Sellars was 3-3 w/Darrel Smith getting 4 RBI.

The second game against Lane Construction resulted in a 17-3 win for FBF. Roger Scott, Roy Hern and Darrel Smith were 3-3, Dave Sellars 2-2, Darrel Smith getting 5 RBI.

Sunday’s first game was a classic battle for the championship, with both teams 2- 0. Venom was ranked #1 and Frankie Brin Financial #2. FBF won 17-15 in 8 innings. It was a low scoring game after 6 innings at 7-7. In the top of the 7th inning, FBF scored 6 runs and the Venom came back and scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 7 th . With the score tied at 13 going into the 8th inning, FBF scored 4 runs in the top of the 8th while Venom scored 2 runs. Venom had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs when the batter drilled the ball toward right center field and Gary Nicolay made a back handed, across the body, ankle high catch as he rolled over several times while holding onto the ball. Gary was 4-4, 3 RBI w/a ITP HR. There were several outstanding plays in the game that were critical – in the 6th inning Rod Severson made an over the shoulder catch on the right field foul line to keep Venom from scoring. In the 7th inning the game saving play was a catch made by Roy Hern playing left center field making an across the body catch to keep Venom from winning the game in the 7th, and the Gary Nicolay’s catch in the 8 th inning.

In the fourth game, FBF won 16-7 over Fred’s Market. Bob Buchanan, Ralph Hollis, were 3-3, Roger Scott and Roy Hern also had 3 hits. John Rebardo and Rod Severson each had a ITP HR. Ed Krisha did an excellent job pitching in 3 games and Roger Scott pitched in the 4 th game. Defense and timely hitting were the key to our success said Mgr. (for the weekend), Dick Kanyan. It was probably the most dramatic finish I’ve ever witnessed in a softball game. Leading hitters for Frankie Brin Financial: Dave Sellars (.909) 10-11 w/8 RBI, Jim Greco (.833) 5-6 w/all extra base hits, Roger Scott, Roy Hern, and Gary Nicolay (.800) the #1 through #3 batters in the line-up, Gary also had an ITP HR, Floyd Williams (.786), Ralph Hollis (.667), John Rebardo (.643) ITP HR, Rod Severson (.636) 8 RBI w/ITP HR, Carter Honkonen (.600), Bob Buchanan (.571), Darrel Smith (.538) w/12 RBI, Ed Krisha and Carl Roberts (.500), and Dick Kanyan (.143).
