A group of Sumterville residents asked Sumter County commissioners to help them battle a popular ATV and motorcycle racetrack along County Road 526.
Board Chairman Doug Gilpin said the county would start a code enforcement case immediately to determine whether the racetrack violates the county noise ordinance as the residents claim.
Linda Wood, who lives near the 30-acre track, said the track operates from November until March.
She said the daily races rattle windows and generate so much noise that conversation is difficult.
“We really feel like the law is being violated,” she said. “The issue obviously is very disturbing to us.”
Wood said the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office has rebuffed efforts by neighbors to file complaints.
Another neighbor, Andrew Hurst, said he was forced to move a barbecue party to another location due to dust and noise.
“I get the dust cloud in my house,” he said.
Carrie Corn said she and her husband bought their property for retirement in 2009.
“It was great until the ATVs showed up in 2014,” she said.
Wood said the track is owned by Scott Kiger, who owns Shaft Drillers International, a Pennsylvania company that digs shafts for mining and other industries.
