A Community Development District 2 supervisor is trying to spur the Amenity Authority Committee into doing something about an abandoned vehicle that has been parked for the past eight months at Savannah Center.
Bryan Lifsey, a resident of the Village of Alhambra, expressed his concern Wednesday morning to AAC members meeting at Savannah Center.
He also urged the AAC to take action to establish enforceable overnight parking rules at recreation centers and postal stations north of County Road 466.
He admitted that doing so would likely be a long arduous process that could require legislative action.
“At best it would take several months,” Lifsey said.
The black Jeep Liberty to which Lifsey was referring bears an Arizona license plate with a tag that expired in March 2016.
Lifsey said he contacted the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office about the abandoned vehicle of which it was already aware. He said he was informed by the sherif’s office that the tags had been run and that the vehicle was not reported stolen nor was it wanted in connection with any ongoing investigation. SCSO further advised that since the car was properly parked in a marked parking spot on private property, they were unable to do anything to remove it.
“Until the fairly recent brouhaha and subsequent prohibition against tour busses loading/unloading passengers at any recreation center, numerous news articles advised residents that there was ‘no overnight parking’ at recreation centers. Apparently the existence of such a rule is balderdash or District staff in unable or unwilling to enforce such a rule. Soon we run the risk of our recreation centers becoming the ‘dumping ground of choice’ for unwanted, unregistered, abandoned vehicles since no one seems able to do anything to clean up this unsightly mess or to stop this practice,” he said.
He added that the inaction is “making a laughingstock of District Government.”
AAC Chairman Carl Bell said the matter is already being addressed.
“Staff has that under control and is pursuing it,” Bell said.
