A man in a wheelchair suspected of stealing a notebook computer from Best Buy in February, was arrested after returning to the store last week.
A loss prevention officer at the store told Lady Lake police that a man, later identified as 64-year-old James Alvin Evans, had entered the store and selected a HP Notebook computer and went to the restroom, according to a report from the police department. He ditched the box and concealed the laptop in his wheelchair. Evans had another item on his lap which set off the alarm as he attempted to leave the store. He gave that item back to store personnel and left the store with the notebook computer still concealed in his wheelchair. Store personnel indicated they believed he had previously attempted this tactic at the store.
Police obtained a warrant for Evans’ arrest on a charge of grand retail theft. Police were notified by Best Buy personnel on March 18 that he had returned to the store. Evans was arrested during a traffic stop in the parking lot at Home Depot.
He was booked at the Lake County Jail on $4,000 bond.
