Residents can take steps toward protecting themselves from identity theft by taking part in the fifth annual Scam Jam Shred-a-Thon.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 1 in the parking lot of Target at Rolling Acres Plaza.

The event offers residents the opportunity to shred sensitive documents on site, for free. The event is hosted by the Lady Lake Police Department with partners including the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, Seniors vs. Crime and the Villages Public Safety Department.

Last year, 25,000 pounds of documents was shredded.
