A 54-year-old Vero Beach woman was arrested after a golf cart she was driving was spotted improperly crossing U.S. Hwy. 27/441.
Clellia A. Bergamino was at the wheel of the golf cart at 1:40 a.m. Sunday when it crossed U.S. Hwy. 27/441 at Griffin Avenue, according to an arrest report from the Lady Lake Police Department. A police officer then observed the golf cart turn onto La Grande Boulevard in The Villages.
Bergamino, who was accompanied by two passengers, told the police officer that they were from out of town and were trying to get back to Lake Sumter Landing. In plain view was a still cold, open can of Michelob Light which had spilled onto the floor of the golf cart, according to the arrest report.
She failed field sobriety exercises. While a breath test was being administered, Bergamino spontaneously uttered, “I should be able to blow, because I used to have one of those locking devices on my car.”
However, Bergamino provided several insufficient breath samples in which the proper volume was not met, the report noted. Ultimately, breath samples measuring .157 and .158 blood alcohol content were collected.
She previously had been convicted of DUI in 2012, the report said.
The golf cart, which was later towed from the scene, was found to have a cooler containing several unopened cans of beer.
Bergamino was booked at the Lake County Jail on $1,000 bond.
