The Summer on the Square series sponsored by The Villages Recreation Department continued Monday morning with Hula Hoop Fitness and Fun at Lake Sumter Landing. Led by instructors Debbie Krish and Cindy Duncan attendees started with a warm up and went right into a variety of routines. Krish and Duncan teach Hula Hoop on Tuesdays and Fridays at Eisenhower Recreation Center.

Krish welcomed everyone to Hooping in the Square. She said that hula hooping is quickly becoming the latest fitness craze. “Hula Hooping really works your core,” said Krish.“You want a hoop that is larger and heavier. If you try to use the kind we did as children in the backyard, you are going to have a tough time keeping it going.” Krish, a certified Hoop Fit instructor, started hula hooping 14 years ago in Rochester.

“I really wanted to spread the word when I moved to The Villages four years ago, so I began teaching a class.” Duncan started out as one of Krish’s students. “She was so good, I asked her to come teach with me,” said Krish.

Some of the attendees were from the classes at Eisenhower, others hula hoop on their own. Lorna Long took up hula hooping after hearing a celebrity say she had done it to lose weight.

“I can’t get down on the floor to do sit-ups, so I decided to try this,” said Long. She has lost fourteen pounds including what she calls “you know that stuff that hangs over your waist.” She does it for thirty minutes a day, ten minutes at a time. “I can just stand in my living room and watch a TV show while I am doing it.”

Village of Belle Aire resident Rose Young has been taking the classes at Eisenhower for a few weeks.

“It is not as easy as it looks, but it is a lot of fun,” said Young.

Summer on the Square continues with The Enrichment Academy Expo coming up in August.
