To the Editor:
Firstly, let’s agree that the current means of ensuring deed compliance is ineffective and divisive. Those “caught” should not resort to the grade-school argument of blaming the person who reported them. At the same time, your neighbors should tell you about your error, assuming that you did not already know that you were out of compliance. However, human nature as it is, neighbors are the least likely to do so.
What we need, I believe, is for each District to set up a voluntary, survey committee (manned by local residents) and trained in deed restrictions. That committee would then systematically assess compliance within its respective district (and likely provide public notices of when and where), then report the non-compliances to the “government” for handling.
