Members of the Lake Sumter Lions Club showed up in large numbers Wednesday morning to plea for the continuation of their aluminum can collection program.
Community Development District 2 Supervisor Bill Schikora had complained that the can collection bins at postal stations north of County Road 466 had become a dumping ground for other trash.
Lions Club members in their bright orange vests filled several rows of chairs at Wednesday’s meeting of the Amenity Authority Committee at Savannah Center as club President Ralph Long pleaded for the continuation of the program.
AAC members said they have seen great improvement since the matter was called to the club’s attention.
“The reality is they have been unsightly. But since it was called to your attention, it has been kept up,” said AAC member Ann Forrester.
AAC member Don Deakin noted that cans are now being collected three times a week and decals have been put on the collection bins explaining limitations on items to be collected.
The AAC has agreed to allow the can collection to continue.
