A 62-year-old homeless man was arrested in the parking lot at Belk after allegedly attacking a police officer.
Lady Lake police were called about a trespassing complaint at about 6 a.m. Friday at Main Street and Paige Place in Spanish Springs.
When the first officer arrived, he spotted Willie Beckham, who had made his way to the parking lot of Belk at La Plaza Grande. Beckham would not cooperate, balled up his fists and waved his arms in the air, according to an arrest report from the Lady Lake Police Department. The officer threatened to use a taser on Beckham, but missed when he fired the weapon. As the officer was loading another cartridge, Beckham charged at him and struck him in the head with his fist.
Additional officers arrived on the scene, Beckham was taken into custody and handcuffed. He was arrested on charges of battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer with violence. He was booked at the Lake County Jail on $10,000 bond.
