Community Development District 10 supervisors on Thursday drew a line in the sand with regard to pergolas that could become “carports.”
CDD 10 is in a fairly unique position, because some new homes have been constructed by the Developer with pergolas in the front of the home.
Neighbors have seen those pergolas and have applied to the Architectural Review Committee for a similar structure in the front of their homes. Those requests have been turned down due to the language in CDD 10’s Architectural Review Manual.
CDD 10 Supervisor Joyce Edmonds adamantly opposed allowing the pergolas in the front of a home.

“They could put a barbecue grill under it. What next? Maybe they can put up a clothes line,” she said.
Edmonds, who noted she has lived in The Villages for 13 years, expressed fear of changes and requests that could be on the horizon.
“As we get bigger and the Developer makes changes, we are going to get inundated with the changes the Developer makes,” she predicted.
As the supervisors reviewed photos of existing pergolas, CDD 10 Chairman Don Wiley said he was concerned that some could become “carports.”
Supervisors had been scheduled to consider and vote on a change to the Architectural Review Manual that would have allowed the ARC to grant requests for similar pergolas in CDD 10.
Supervisors opted not to move forward, thus requests for pergolas out front will not be granted in CDD 10.
