Villager irked by anonymous complaint process after more than 20 complaints in his neighborhood

A Villager spoke out against the anonymous complaint process after more than 20 complaints were recently lodged in his neighborhood.

Village of Charlotte resident John Rouba aired his unhappiness Thursday afternoon before the Community Development District 9 Board of Supervisors.

Someone complained about yard ornaments at his home and there are two open deed compliance cases against his property.

“If somebody wants to complain about me, I think they need to tell me to my face. Then I can do something about it,” Rouba said.

He said there have been “22 to 23” complaints in his neighborhood. He described the person who reported the violations as “overzealous.”

Candice Dennis, of Community Standards, explained a bit about how the process works.

“Technically, who is making a complaint is our deed compliance officer,” she said.

That is the Community Standards employee responsible for verifying the complaint.

She said the anonymous complaint system is designed to promote harmony in the neighborhood and keep from pitting neighbor against neighbor.

Dennis said 94 percent of the complaints that are received are anonymous.

“Everybody has the right to have the deed restriction enforced,” she added.

Village of Sanibel resident Vince Czajkoski said there were recently 29 complaints in his neighborhood.

“People are in an uproar,” he said.
