A violent spat over a spelling error at the Burger King restaurant inside the Summerfield Wal-Mart has landed an Ocala woman behind bars.
A Marion County sheriff’s deputy on Thursday afternoon responded to the store, located at 17861 S U.S. Hwy. 441. He spoke with a woman who claimed that 25-year-old Kellie Matos, a co-worker, “pushed and punched” her in the face at the restaurant. The woman said Matos was yelling at her about being made fun of for misspelling a customer’s name.
The woman, who didn’t have any marks or bruising on her face, told the deputy that Matos was “aggressive” toward her and also pushed her in the chest, a sheriff’s office report states.
The deputy spoke with the Burger King manager, who said she had to separate Matos and the woman before the incident escalated. She said both were then sent home for the day.
The manager also told the deputy that the area where the altercation took place is a “dead space” in the restaurant’s surveillance system. She said she didn’t have access to review the camera systems and that only her district manager, who was on vacation, could do that.
The deputy then responded to Matos’ residence in Ocala. She told the deputy she “never touched” the woman but was trying to retrieve her purse from the office before leaving the restaurant, the report says.
The deputy told Matos what both the woman and the manager had said and then took her into custody. She was charged with battery and released early Friday morning on $1,000 bond. No court date has yet been set for Matos to answer to the charge.
