A Sumter County road crew has made repairs to a small hole that opened up early Tuesday afternoon in the southbound lane of Tatonka Terrace near The Villages Charter School.
Traffic is flowing smoothly on the roadway and the area around the “dry depression” is scheduled to be repaved on Friday. That will require the southbound lane of Tatonka Terrace to be closed around the small area for a short time, said Sumter County Administrator Bradley Arnold.
Crews also inspected the nearby stormwater piping and determined there were no issues with that system to cause the hole, Arnold said.
A similar incident happened Tuesday in the Spanish Springs area when a hole opened in the pavement on Avenida Central near La Plaza Grande shopping center. It was determined that a nearby leaky storm drain, just behind The Villages Golf Cars, caused that issue. Lady Lake Town Manager Kris Kollgaard said a crew from the town’s public works department was dispatched to make repairs.
This isn’t the first time that holes have opened in roadways in The Villages. In June, a leaky storm drain caused a similar issue on Avenida Central at the Cortez Gate. That hole initially was believed to be about the width of a coffee can but was later discovered to be larger.
In July 2018, a hole opened at the busy intersection of CR 466 and County Road 101, just across from The Villages High School.
In that incident a Sumter County road crew had to remove large chunks of blacktop before assessing the problem and figuring out how to proceed in fixing the hole, which was in the northbound lane of CR 101 near a storm drain.
