Villager to answer in court after theft of clothing for ‘family trip’

A Village of Collier woman will have to answer in court after the alleged theft of clothing she needed for an upcoming “family trip.”

Billie Jo Tyrrell, 61, on the afternoon of Sept. 13 entered Belk at La Plaza Grande in The Villages and took several items of clothing into a fitting room, according to an arrest report from the Lady Lake Police Department. When she exited the fitting room, she had one of the items tucked in her purse.

Tyrrell then went to the store’s Crown and Ivy department and selected more clothing and went back into a fitting room. When she left, a second item had been concealed in her handbag. She attempted to leave the store, but was stopped by a loss prevention officer.

When a police officer arrived, Tyrrell admitted she had a blue pullover jacket valued at $59.50 and a leopard print turtleneck valued at $36 concealed in her purse.

“Billie stated that she had stolen the items because she had a family trip coming up and was in need of clothes,” the officer wrote in the arrest report.

She was issued a notice to appear Oct. 2 in Lake County Court to answer to a charge of theft.

Tyrrell was in the news last year after her son was shot dead by her husband in the Marianna Villas.
