Semi trailer engulfed in flames shuts down traffic on I-75 in Sumter County

A semi which collided with a concrete wall causing its trailer to erupt in flames shut down traffic early Monday morning on Interstate 75 in Sumter County.

Theus Watson, 31, of Orlando had been driving the semi at 2:44 a.m. and traveling northbound on the interstate, approaching Exit 329 at State Road 44 when the front right of the vehicle collided with a guardrail and then the barrier wall, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

The rig’s trailer separated and became engulfed in flames. The fire and subsequent cleanup shut down traffic in the northbound lanes until 6:15 a.m., the report said. The outside shoulder was to remain closed for 24 hours for roadway repairs.

Watson escaped injury, but was ticketed on a charge of careless driving.
