Apopka bowler takes top prize in tourney honoring late Fiesta Bowl employee

An Apopka bowler took home the big prize from the recent Tom Nemish Memorial Senior Shoot Out at Fiesta Bowl.

Five hundred dollars was added to the tournament fund in honor of Nemish, a longtime employee who worked at the front desk of Fiesta Bowl. His wife, Madeline and her sister and brother-in-law also attended the event, which is planned for next year as well.

In the final round shoot out, Mike Raines, of The Villages, started with the first three strikes. Rory Peterson, of Jacksonville, followed with the first two, but in the end, it was Dennis Rakauskas, of Apopka, who took home the title with four strikes out of his last five shots and a game of 235.

Raines had a split in the fourth frame and a miss in the sixth but finished strong with 206 for third place. Peterson only converted one more double and finished with a clean 216 game for second place.

By besting the other 73 entrants, Rakauskas took home the winner’s share, a champion’s shirt courtesy of Gotta Get Your Name On Shirts and Embroidery and a paid entry into the Oct. 19 Senior Shoot Out. He also became the second bowler to qualify for the season championship in August 2020. Peterson is last season’s champion and automatically is qualified.

Doug Nairn, of DeBary, tossed 12 strikes in the first game of qualifying. For his 300 game, Nairn received a personalized tote courtesy of Generations Pro Shop.
Of the 74 entrants in the tournament, 21 were Super Seniors. Seven made the natural cut of 609, which meant four Super Seniors were invited to continue.

The next event at Fiesta Bowl is scheduled for Oct. 19 at 11 a.m. It is open to all bowlers age 55 and older, with special consideration given to those ages 70 and older.
