A teen was arrested after allegedly attempting to steal $352 worth of items at Walmart.

Kayla Denise La’Tia Upshaw, 18, of Fort Myers, on Monday morning allegedly left the Walmart at Buffalo Ridge Plaza in The Villages with the merchandise in shopping bags, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

She had been caught on video surveillance taking the merchandise through a self-checkout lane, but failing to pay for the items. After she left the store, she was questioned by deputies. She claimed her boyfriend had the Walmart receipt, but said he was “somewhere in the area.” Upshaw attempted to give deputies a false name and resisted their efforts to take her into custody.

She was arrested on charges of theft, providing a false name to a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest and theft.

She was was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center on $2,500 bond.
