A Summerfield man was arrested on drug charges after telling deputies he fixed a golf cart in exchange for fentanyl.

A deputy responded to a traffic stop at 6300 SE 145th Street, Summerfield, around 1:40 p.m. Wednesday, according to an arrest report from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. Upon arrival, he met with another deputy who had 51-year-old James Dale Wells. He had been stopped for driving a golf cart on a public road.

When asked for his ID, Wells advised that he did not have any due to not having a valid driver’s license. He instead gave his name and stated he was 49 years old, which made the deputies suspicious. He eventually gave the correct information and was unhandcuffed, the report said.

Wells then told the deputies that he repaired the golf cart for “Hector” and was taking it back to Hector’s mother’s house. He lifted the seat of the golf cart and allowed them to search for a serial number. At this time, he had a backpack in his possession, the report said.

A deputy asked if he had anything illegal inside the backpack, and Wells became extremely nervous. He opened the backpack and took out a small black pouch, handing it to the deputy. The pouch contained a small plastic container with a light powder that Wells stated would be heroin, the report said.

Wells explained he was paid in heroin to work on the golf cart. However, the powder was field tested and came back negative for fentanyl and methamphetamine. It later tested positive for fentanyl instead, the report said.

The deputies were allowed to look at the backpack for any more contraband and discovered a “hype kit,” or drug paraphernalia. There were numerous syringes, one of which had liquid inside, along with a cut straw, a knife and a lighter. Wells admitted that he used the syringes to inject drugs, the report said.

Wells was arrested on charges of possession of fentanyl and drug paraphernalia. He was transported to Marion County Jail with bond set at $3,000.

The West Virginia native was also arrested in Oct. 2024 after he was found in a fetal position in the road while overdosing on fentanyl.
