We have a president spending billions to send the National Guard and military into our nation’s streets to combat crime. If he were really serious, he would do what he’s so fond of doing and issue an Executive Order requiring Congress to write gun safety legislation.
There’s no need to repeat the statistics from the Gun Violence Archive. They are shocking. There are more guns than people in the U.S. More children die by guns violence than any other source. The good people who say they value life above all else but ignore the primary cause of death and injury by gun violence are hypocrites. Each year 45,000 lives are taken by gun violence.
No one wants to take away your precious guns. But lots of us want to save precious lives. It’s simple. Get weapons of war off American streets. Outlaw assault-style weapons. Trump can issue an Executive Order requiring the Pentagon to buy them back. Require a background check for every gun purchase. Outlaw 3D weapons. Require at least a five-day waiting period before collecting a firearm. Enforce current laws against illegal purchase, possession, and sale of firearms. Outlaw straw man sales: buying a firearm for those banned from possessing them.
If Trump were really serious about reducing crime, he could do this with a stroke of a marker. Come on, Trump. You said, “I can do anything I want.” Exercise that power you brag so incessantly about. Your action would surely make America a safer and greater place to live.
