A pair of Summerfield men with criminal records were arrested when one stole a body cam while the other resisted deputies.
Deputies got a call about 27-year-old Patrick Dale Ortwein on a black motorcycle at 9625 SE 160th Pl., Summerfield, at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to an arrest report from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. He was wanted for grand theft of a motor vehicle, so a fugitive apprehension unit responded to take him in.

Upon arrival, they spotted Ortwein riding away on a black Yamaha motorcycle. They parked in his path and ordered him to surrender, but he instead started pushing the motorcycle backward to flee. A gate closed behind him, which triggered him to grab it and try to open it to get away, the report said.
One of the deputies deployed an electronic disabling device, and it momentarily worked. They tried to handcuff Ortwein who resisted by tensing up and pulling away. His left wrist was successfully cuffed as he continued to struggle, which caused him and a deputy to fall to the ground while holding onto his right arm, the report said.
Ortwein still continued to pull away and tense his body to keep them from detaining him. He moved his arms away and tried to stand up to run, too. The deputies managed to handcuff him anyway, the report said.
During this struggle, 51-year-old Darrius Deon Reid screamed at the deputies. He saw when one of their $214 body cams was knocked off, grabbed it and started walking away with it as they brought Ortwein to a patrol vehicle. The deputies had to go after him, causing him to drop it for them to recover. He was ultimately arrested, the report said.
More deputies later came to the scene as backup and lifted the motorcycle off the ground. Near the handlebars was a lighter in the shape of a revolver and a small jar with one gram of methamphetamine. A saddle bag on the front of it contained a red metal tube with cocaine residue, the report said.
Ortwein was also holding a red and black backpack around his chest and a cooler around his waist. Multiple items fell out of the backpack during the struggle, but in it were multiple rubber and glass pipes with burnt fentanyl residue, the report said.
The cooler contained a scale with white powdery residue and a small zipper case with multiple Ziplock bags of white powder. One of the bags had a crystal substance that weighed one gram and tested positive for methamphetamine, the report said.
A check of Ortwein’s driving history showed several suspensions dating from Nov. 5, 2021, to Sept. 23, 2024. These included failures to pay court financial obligations, fleeing or attempting to elude police officer and non-judgement suspensions, the report said.
Additionally, the motorcycle had been reported stolen in a separate case. A property crimes detective examined it and saw the license plate came back to a Honda, not the Yamaha it was attached to. He tried to read the public VIN on the right side of the motorcycle, but it was covered in possibly paint or a sticker, the report said.
The detective later asked Ortwein how he got the motorcycle, and he stated he got it from a “friend.” He did not elaborate, the report said.
Ortwein was charged with possession of methamphetamine, resist (obstruct without violence), possession of drug paraphernalia, knowingly driving while license suspended and grand theft of motor vehicle. He was transported to Marion County Jail and released after posting $10,000 bond.
Reid was charged with obstruct police (deprive means of protection or communication) and larceny (second degree petit theft). He was taken to jail with bond set at $3,500.
Ortwein has been arrested many times in the past, including in April 2020 for fleeing from Marion County deputies and in Dec. 2016 for riding a motorcycle without an endorsement.
Reid was also arrested in August after being tased four times for resisting law enforcement and in May 2018 for child abuse.
