The Amenity Authority Committee has faced plenty of criticism over a golf maintenance facility that will cost more than $1 million, now there are some unplanned cost overruns.

The controversial $1.26 million Mira Mesa golf maintenance facility was approved in May by the AAC. The facility’s fiercest critic has been AAC member Jim Vaccaro. He has questioned whether a maintenance facility for use by a contractor should be considered an amenity. He has also questioned why a building needs to be built for the contractor’s equipment after all these years. In addition, AAC member William Williamson wondered why nearly half of the money allocated for the project was going to be spent on site and roadwork.

At Wednesday’s meeting at Savannah Center, AAC members learned that the Mira Mesa project now has $121,859 in cost overruns.

After the project began, it was learned that additional trees would have to be removed, a temporary wall had to be erected for erosion control, a bypass sewage pump had to be installed and planned retaining walls had to be thickened up.

Fearing the expensive project could be seen as a boondoggle by residents, AAC members seemed nervous about what the future might hold.

“I am bothered by the fact that more due diligence wasn’t done,” said AAC member Don Deakin. “This is certainly adding to the cost.”
