There is some confusion as to whether a new Florida law allows Villagers to put down artificial turf rather than grass.
Community Development District 4 Supervisor Mark Hayes said he has been asked about the new law.
“I told a resident, ‘Don’t do it, until we know for sure,’” Hayes said.
The new Florida law (HB 683/SB 712) preempts local governments from banning synthetic turf on single-family homes under one acre, meaning homeowners can install compliant turf despite what their local government might have to say about it.
It’s not clear if the deed restrictions in The Villages can still prevent homeowners from putting down artificial turf.
An official with The Villages District government said district counsel is researching the matter.
Villager Dan Meyers recently penned a letter to the editor about allowing artificial turf to replace grass.
“Instead of forcing us to endlessly water this grass, we should be able to opt out and install artificial grass or some sort of stones that would conform with the neighborhood look. Our water bills are horrible and we are in a drought! Let us stop this incessant watering cycle,” Meyers wrote in his letter.
