A material used in a Villager’s lanai addition is raising some eyebrows.
Ronald Cain, who lives at 17329 SE 81st Thornehill Ave. in the Village of Chatham, appeared this past week in a deed compliance hearing at the District Office in Brownwood.
A complaint had been received in September about the type of roof on the screen enclosure and white panels on the screen enclosure at his home. Community Standards went to the residence and inspected the structure. It was to be found in violation of the deed restriction.

Cain brought a sample of the product to this week’s deed compliance hearing to show to Special Master Terry Neal, a retired Lake County judge. He described the material as “roll shingle.”
His wife, Dawn, claimed that they had clearly described the material in their ARC application. She called the roofing material “stick-on” shingles and admitted they are “not regular shingles.”
A representative of Community Standards pointed out that the ARC manual for Community District 4 clearly states that the material that is required for the roof of such a structure must be shingles or tiles.
However, Cain said he believed the material was permissible and thought it was attractive.
“I didn’t think it would be visually objectionable to anybody,” Cain said.
He complained that he spent “a lot of money” on the project.
The special master urged the couple to go back to the ARC and try to come up with a plan that would meet with the ARC’s approval.
