A 12th-grade senior at Wildwood Middle High School has been named the Career and Technical Education Student of the Month for January.
Fiona Chen exemplifies academic excellence, leadership and a passion for learning through her involvement in multiple CTE programs. She is currently enrolled in the principles of teaching and digital design CTE programs of study. Previously, she completed courses in agriculture, business computer applications and computer science. Currently, she is a student employee for the digital design school-based enterprise.
When asked why she chose these CTE classes, Chen shared, “I thought these CTE courses would greatly benefit me in the future. They will provide me with valuable skills, many unique experiences, and provide me with the basic foundations of entrepreneurship.”
She also expressed what she enjoys most about CTE at Wildwood Middle High School.
“I enjoy the hands-on learning. I get to operate machinery like the grommet tool and printers. We make actual lesson plans for students, and sometimes we get the opportunity to visit the elementary school and work face-to-face with the younger students. It is all very engaging and interesting!”
Chen has earned several industry certifications, including: Entrepreneur and Small Business, Adobe Certified Professional in Visual Design: Photoshop and Illustrator, Certified Food Protection Manager (ServSafe®), and WordPress Certified Editor. She plans to obtain Adobe Certified Professional in Video Design: Premiere Pro and After Effects before graduation. She plans to be well prepared when interviewing for employment positions.
Chen has also received numerous awards while attending Wildwood Middle High, such as:
- Second place in the Holocaust Remembrance Art Contest
- Display finalist for the Sumter’s Future Entrepreneurs Contest (2025)
- FBLA Secretary (2025–2026)
After high school, Chen plans to attend the University of Florida to earn a bachelor’s degree in business with a focus in accounting, while gaining work experience.
Her teacher, Mr. Childs, praised her leadership qualities.
“I really appreciate how Fiona is such a respectful and organized leader. She manages responsibilities efficiently and is always willing to guide her classmates with kindness and a clear sense of direction.”
Chen’s strong communication skills and professionalism make her an outstanding representative of Sumter County’s CTE programs. She is highly deserving of this recognition.
