The Federal Bureau of Investigation has taken over an investigation into stolen military explosives that were found at a home in The Villages and led to evacuation order of nearby properties.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) provided an update about the explosives that were found in a home in the Village of Rio Ranchero.

According to SCSO, deputies responded to 1505 Yucatan Way at around 11 a.m. after receiving a call about suspicious items that appeared to be military-grade explosives.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officials immediately began evacuating nearby residences in anticipation of the arrival of the Lake County Bomb Squad. Investigators and bomb squad technicians determined that the items were confirmed stolen from the military.

The scene was cleared of all explosives and residents were permitted to return to their homes a short time thereafter.

No injuries were reported during the incident and SCSO stated that the FBI has taken over the lead on the investigation. Any further updates regarding the case will be provided by federal authorities.
