The Lady Lake Kiwanians Club members joined together to ensure that needy children attending both The Villages Elementary School in Lady Lake and the Fruitland Park Elementary School will not miss meals during spring break.
The students whom the schools identified as needing lunch assistance will receive food packages during spring break.
Fifteen years ago, Glenda Brown and her husband Bud learned from the staff at The Villages Elementary School on Rolling Acres Road in Lady Lake that students from low-income families eligible for free or subsidized school lunches might have no meals during the break. The Browns brought the need to help the students to their fellow Kiwanians who have been helping ever since.
Ninety-five lunches were prepared Thursday for The Villages Elementary School, and 75 food bags went to Fruitland Park Elementary School, where teachers will distribute the bags so the children are sure to have lunches during the spring break. Brown indicated that the Kiwanians distributed 40 food bags when they originally started the program and have seen the need for program increase over the years.
The two-day event took place at the Lady Lake Parks and Recreation building, located next to the sports field off Rolling Acres Road. Corey Gold, president of the club, expressed the club’s gratitude to the Town of Lady Lake, the Lady Lake Parks and Recreation Department and its Director Mike Burske for the support they received.
The Kiwanians were aided by the Aktion club whose members are special needs children and adults. The Aktion Club is sponsored by the Lady Lake Kiwanis Club.
The Kiwanis Club is always looking for men and women who want to help local children. The Kiwanis Club president, Corey Gold, would welcome new members. Gold can be reached at (305) 321-0433 or by email at [email protected].
