A new maestro has accepted the presidency of the Opera Club of The Villages and announced upcoming scholarship events.
At a special gathering held on Thursday evening at Laurel Manor Recreation Center, Maestro Bill Doherty formally accepted the position of president of the opera club, marking a meaningful new chapter for one of the community’s most enduring arts organizations.

A founding member of the club, Doherty reflected on the organization’s remarkable history and its profound impact on young artists. Since its inception, the opera club has awarded more than $700,000 in scholarships to aspiring musicians, many of whom have gone on to distinguished careers.
Among them are standout recipients such as Fernando Varela, best known for his appearances on America’s Got Talent; Devin Eatmon, currently performing with the Vienna State Opera; and Kaitlyn McMonigle, a featured artist with the Wolf Trap Festival. Each exemplifies the transformative power of the club’s support and mentorship.
In his remarks, Doherty also emphasized the importance of artistic mentorship and adjudication, drawing on his own experience serving on adjudication panels of numerous not-for-profit arts organizations. His work in evaluating and nurturing emerging talent reinforces his lifelong commitment to the arts.
Doherty expressed deep gratitude to the many individuals who have sustained and strengthened the opera club. He offered sincere thanks to past and present board members, dedicated volunteers, generous donors, talented performers and loyal supporters, each vital to the organization’s success.
Looking ahead, the opera club will continue its proud tradition with the upcoming Harold Schwartz Scholarship Competition, held on April 11 at 9 a.m. at Laurel Manor Recreation Center. The event is open to the public and will showcase the region’s most promising musical talent. Winners will perform at the club’s monthly meeting on Thursday, April 23, at 7 p.m., again at Laurel Manor.
“As we move forward,” said Doherty, “we remain committed to honoring our legacy while expanding our reach—supporting young artists, enriching our community and ensuring that great music thrives for generations.”
