U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement put a hold on a man from Guatemala who was arrested for riding a motorcycle which had no license plate.
A deputy observed 23-year-old Basilio Cano-Escobedo riding a red 2021 Honda CRF250F 250cc off-road motorcycle northbound on County Road 205 in Wildwood around 12:20 p.m. Sunday, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
The motorcycle had no license plate attached, so the deputy stopped him as he pulled into his driveway on County Road 230C. When asked about the lack of a license plate, Cano-Escobedo stated he just bought the motorcycle. He also admitted he never had a driver’s license issued to him, and he was not a United States citizen, the report said.
He instead handed over a Guatemalan ID card, which was used to confirm he had never been issued a driver’s license or a motorcycle endorsement. The motorcycle was listed for off-highway use and was not registered to be driven on the roadway, the report said.
Cano-Escobedo was subsequently arrested on charges of operating a motorcycle without a license, failure to register a motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle without valid license. The native of Guatemala was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center and will be turned over to ICE.
