A pair from Summerfield landed in jail after allegedly stealing $50 worth of items from Wawa.

An officer responded to Wawa, located at 11770 N U.S. 301 in Oxford, regarding a report of a retail theft at 9:40 p.m. Tuesday, according to an arrest report from the Wildwood Police Department. Upon arrival, an employee ran out and pointed at 37-year-old Iris Arcely Fajardo Sagastume and 37-year-old Gabriel Angel Rodriguez in a white Toyota Corolla that was leaving the parking lot.

The officer was able to stop the pair on County Road 466 near the intersection with County Road 201. They were told to get out while another officer went back to Wawa to speak with the employee. Law enforcement then learned that Fajardo Sagastume and Rodriguez grabbed several items and left the store without paying the $50.73 owed, the report said.

Fajardo Sagastume invoked her right to remain silent and did not answer any questions. But Rodriguez admitted that the items in a grey plastic bag in the backseat were things he had stolen from Wawa. He stated he was “down bad” from being fired a few weeks prior, as he barely had any food at home, the report said.

Both were arrested on charge of petit theft and booked at the Sumter County Detention Center with their bonds set at $500 each.
