A Villager was arrested after allegedly skip-scanning nearly $40 worth of ribeye steaks at the Walmart at Sarasota Plaza in The Villages.
Sherri Ann Cohen, 72, of the Village of Osceola Hills, was arrested Sunday afternoon after a loss prevention officer spotted her at the store’s self-checkout aisles. According to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, Cohen stacked a ribeye steak valued at $38.74 on top of other steaks, purposely scanning only the bottom one.

Surveillance video also showed Cohen pretending to scan a bottle of Tide laundry detergent and a 32-pack of Aquafina water. Furthermore, she selected a quantity of two lemons on the screen instead of the three she actually had.
In total, Cohen allegedly attempted to steal $59.86 worth of merchandise. She passed all points of sale and exited the store before being stopped.
A criminal history check revealed the Brooklyn, New York, native had no prior theft convictions. Cohen was taken into custody on a misdemeanor charge of second-degree petit theft and booked at the Sumter County Detention Center. She was released after posting a $500 bond.
