A habitual traffic offender from Inverness was arrested in the southern section of The Villages after a police officer spotted his expired license plate.

James Edward Borton, 48, of Inverness, was driving a blue Dodge Ram pickup shortly before 8 a.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Corbin Trail and LaGrange Loop in the Village of LaGrange when a Wildwood police officer noticed the vehicle’s tag had expired in December 2025.
During the traffic stop, Borton handed the officer a Florida identification card and admitted he did not have a valid driver’s license. He also failed to provide proof of motor vehicle liability insurance for the truck.
A check of Borton’s driving history revealed his license was initially revoked in April 2024 following a driving under the influence conviction. He has been classified as a habitual traffic violator the following month, triggering a 60-month suspension.
His extensive record also showed multiple indefinite suspensions for failing to pay court financial obligations and traffic fines, as well as a recent arrest by the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office for driving with a suspended license on May 1.
Borton was arrested on a charge of driving while his license was suspended or revoked and failure to maintain liability insurance. He was also issued a citation for the expired tag.
He was booked at the Sumter County Jail where he was being held without bond. In addition to the new charges, he was also wanted on multiple warrants charging him with failure to appear.
