Salvatore J. Bucolo, 85, of The Villages, Florida, passed away on July 6, 2026, after a courageous journey through several years of declining health.
Born on December 16, 1940, in Reading, Pennsylvania, Sam never measured success by titles or accolades. He believed that a good life was one spent serving others, keeping your word, putting family first, and treating everyone with kindness and respect. Those simple values became the foundation of the life he built and the legacy he leaves behind. Sam was never one to seek attention.
He preferred to work quietly behind the scenes, always willing to lend a hand without expecting anything in return. Friends and family knew him as thoughtful, dependable, incredibly intelligent, and wonderfully humble. He possessed a dry wit that could catch you by surprise and a quiet wisdom that made others feel at ease. If you came to Sam with a problem, he didn’t always have many words, but somehow, when the conversation ended, everything felt a little more manageable. Education and service were important to Sam throughout his life.
He earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Civil Engineering from Drexel University before proudly serving six years in the United States Army Reserves. He devoted33 years to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, where he helped design and oversee projects that strengthened communities and protected lives. His dedication and excellence earned him numerous honors and awards, though he rarely spoke about them. To Sam, it was simply his job to do his best. Retirement never slowed him down.
He continued serving others through engineering consulting and later joined FEMA disaster response teams, helping communities recover after hurricanes, floods, and other natural disasters. Whether building infrastructure or helping rebuild after tragedy, Sam found purpose in making life better for others. Service wasn’t simply what he did, it was who he was. On May 11, 1968, Sam married the love of his life, Geraldine J. Bucolo (née Dombrowski).Together they shared fifty-eight wonderful years of marriage built on faith, love, laughter, and unwavering devotion.
Through every season of life, they remained partners, best friends, and each other’s greatest source of strength. Nothing meant more to Sam than his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and an incredibly proud grandfather. He wasn’t one for grand speeches or dramatic gestures. Instead, he showed his love through quiet acts of kindness, unwavering dependability, and simply being there whenever he was needed. His steady presence brought comfort, and his family always knew they could count on him.
During retirement in The Villages, Sam embraced the simple joys that made life meaningful. He loved spending time on the golf course, following the stock market and investing, participating in church activities, trying his luck at the casino from time to time, and making lasting memories on cruises with family and friends. Whether sharing stories around the dinner table, offering thoughtful advice, or simply enjoying the company of those he loved, those moments brought him his greatest happiness.
Sam is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-eight years, Geraldine J. Bucolo; his daughter, Jennifer Warren of Acworth, Georgia; his son, Matthew Bucolo, daughter-in-law Stacey, and grandson Owen Francis Bucolo of Pottstown, Pennsylvania; and his cherished granddaughter, Alexa Hope Rinehart of Acworth, Georgia.
Although miles separated the family in later years, Sam treasured every visit, every phone call, every holiday, and every opportunity to spend time together. He took great pride in watching his children build their own lives and found immense joy in his grandchildren. Their accomplishments filled him with pride, and simply being with his family was always enough.
While they grieve his passing, they are profoundly grateful for the years they shared with him and find comfort in knowing his influence will continue through the lives of Jen and Matt, Lexi and Owen, and everyone fortunate enough to have known him. His was a life well lived, and a legacy that will never be forgotten.
