A day of heavy drinking that began with several breakfast mimosas ended behind bars for a man who fled a disturbance at a home in The Villages.

Sumter County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched at about 8 p.m. Thursday to a residence on Birmingham Terrace in the Village of St. Charles.

A 911 caller told dispatchers that 26-year-old Cameron Robert Rakyta of Delray Beach had been drinking heavily. The caller noted that Rakyta’s alcohol consumption started early that morning with several mimosas at breakfast and continued non-stop throughout the day. Following the disturbance, Rakyta fled the home in a white Subaru Crosstrek.

A deputy soon spotted the SUV traveling down Buena Vista Boulevard and initiated a traffic stop.

When interacting with Rakyta, the deputy noted a strong odor of alcohol, bloodshot eyes, and a severe sway. Despite the complainant’s detailed timeline of his all-day drinking binge, Rakyta insisted to the deputy that he had consumed absolutely no alcohol that day. He then bizarrely volunteered that his hobbies included fishing and that he had recently caught a 500-pound fish, according to the arrest report.

Rakyta agreed to participate in field sobriety exercises but immediately struggled. He preemptively attempted to touch his nose with his finger before instructions were even given, telling the deputy, “Even sober… I’m sorry… I couldn’t do the…”

During the exercises on a nearby golf cart path, he failed to maintain his balance, stepped off the line multiple times, and forcefully smashed his finger into his nose instead of gently touching the tip. When asked to recite the alphabet, Rakyta chose to sing it instead, messing up the sequence and starting over at “A” after reaching the letter “D.”

He was placed under arrest and transported to the Sumter County Detention Center. He ultimately agreed to a breath test and provided two samples, registering staggering 0.240 and 0.222 blood alcohol content levels — roughly three times the legal limit.

Rakyta was booked on a charge of driving under the influence with a blood alcohol level of 0.15 or higher. He remained behind bars Saturday on $3,000 bond.
