To the Editor:
I am writing in response to Chris Alden’s letter, in which he argues that it is time to clean the cobwebs out of the Senate.” If longevity in office is truly the issue, then that standard should be applied consistently-not just to members of one political party.
Curiously, Mr. Alden failed to mention several Democratic senators who have served for decades, including Patty Murray of Washington (33 years), Ron Wyden of Oregon (30 years), Dick Durbin of Illinois (28 years), Jack Reed of Rhode Island (28 years), and Chuck Schumer of New York (26 years).
If serving a long time in the Senate is a problem, then why weren’t these senators included in his criticism? Selectively applying the sane standard to only one party undermines the credibility of the argument and gives the appearance of partisan bias rather than consistent principle.
If the goal is fairness, then let’s hold everyone to the same standard, regardless of political affiliation or your hatred towards Trump.
