A visually impaired pedestrian was struck Tuesday morning near Spanish Springs Town Square.
Villager Edward Molloy, 69, was crossing Avenida Central at Del Mar Drive at 10:25 a.m. when he was bumped and knocked down by a a 2017 Cadillac SUV, according to the Lady Lake Police Department.
The driver, 76-year-old Ida May Stagner, of the Village of Del Mar, was turning right and did not see the pedestrian. She was ticketed on a charge of failure to yield.
Molloy was transported by ambulance to The Villages Regional Hospital as a precaution, but had suffered no visible injuries. Molloy reportedly has Usher Syndrome, a condition characterized by partial or total hearing loss and vision loss that worsens over time.
The accident occurred on the north side of the intersection, across from the Del Mar Gate, which has stirred recent controversy.
Visually impaired Villagers recently spoke out at an Amenity Authority Committee meeting and last year at a Lady Lake Commission meeting.
This is the third pedestrian struck this year in The Villages;
• Last week, a pedestrian was struck at Lake Sumter Landing.
• Last month, a Villager struck a 79-year-old pedestrian at Spanish Springs Town Square. She blamed the glare of the sun.
